6 months

Dear Kaeden,

You are six months old, big boy! And when I think about that as half of a year, it kind of freaks me out.

You are 17 lb 5 oz (5 oz smaller than your brother at this age) and 26 inches long. Even though you look more & more like a chunk to us, you're in the 50-75th percentile for both height & weight, so I guess you're not as big as you look. You do have some serious cheeks, though! :)

You've had a great month. It's been pretty huge for you in the gross motor area. You started sitting up on your own shortly after turning 5 months... just for a minute at first, but now you can last for quite a while without toppling. I still try to keep your boppy around you if I'm not nearby, though. You tend to get a little over-excited about toys that are just a bit too far away for you to reach.

One huge advantage to sitting up is that you definitely seem to feel less vulnerable, especially around your brother. And he has started playing with you some, too, which is great for everybody.

As you've gotten the hang of sitting up, you've also been spending more time on your tummy. You've figured out how to pivot yourself around to reach more toys, and you're starting to understand that rolling can be effective too. Your latest trick is getting up on your hands and knees, so crawling may not be too far away. I won't mind if you hold off for a while, though. I can only imagine how much more complicated life will be once you are fully mobile!

We also tried you in the jumper for the first time this month. You don't mind it for a short while, but it's definitely not anything exciting to you. You haven't figured out how to jump in it yet, but you're still a little young for that, so we'll see what you think in another month or two. For now, we don't mind you staying on the floor :)

Another huge step this month was starting "solid" foods - we gave you barley cereal for the first time last week, and you didn't even flinch. It was as though you'd been eating from a spoon forever. I usually give you a couple of tablespoons in the morning and evening. We'll start on some veggies soon, but first I want to be sure you don't have a reaction to your amoxicillin...

...Which brings us to your ear infections! You got your first real fever on Saturday - it got up to 102.7, but thankfully only lasted 24 hours. Then, at your check-up yesterday, we found out that you have a double ear infection. Poor baby! I'm afraid you may have gotten your mama's ears, but I pray they won't be as bad as mine.

You have become hilarious in your sleeping habits. Whenever I put you down, you immediately flip over and often times you grab onto the bumper, pulling it down and snuggling it. A couple of times, I have even found you laying on top of the bumper! It's not Mommy's favorite thing for you to do, so I tried giving you a lovee to hold on to - that has helped some, but you still love that bumper. I just have to check on you often!

You are a great sleeper, though, which is wonderful for Mommy. You're still sleeping through the night consistently for 11-12 hours. Now that you're eating some cereal in the morning, you are starting to take a better morning nap, although sometimes it doesn't fit in too well with our other activities. You almost always take at least one good nap (1.5+ hours) a day... 2 naps total. It's hard to complain about that!

You continue to be a bit of a fussy baby, but you're still a sweetheart. When you're content, you are such a joy to be around. I love that you are getting more interactive and that we can really start to play together now. You love it when I sing to you, especially if there are hand motions involved. You're not all that into books yet, but I'm sure you will get there... at least if Ryan has anything to say about it. Rattles & teethers are pretty much your favorite toys these days, although you really like anything with sounds & lights too. They're definitely effective for keeping you happy on your tummy.

As usual, I have extra photos, so here they are. Who can blame me for taking an abundance of pictures of you? You're pretty cute, after all!

with Atticus :)
